Product Life Cycles
and Environmental Product Design for grades 5-8
“Designed by Nature” provides
interdisciplinary curriculum and teacher education focused on
the science of materials use, "green" manufacturing,
and strategies to promote a sustainable economy. The program is
developed by Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in partnership
with Creative Change.

Professional development opportunities
Creative Change is offering two professional development programs
in the summer of 2008, one in Michigan and one in New York. Teachers
will receive the complete curriculum, a materials kit, and content
knowledge on ecological economics.

Outcomes of the "Designed by
Nature" curriculum
Using everyday items such as t-shirts as a launching
point, six in-depth lessons use experiments, simulations, case studies,
reflection, and other hands-on activities to help students
- assess the environmental and social implications of producing clothing,
food, and other products.
- learn about products that minimize pollution, use less energy,
and promote worker safety.
- understand the science of compostable plastics, organic fiber production,
and other aspects of materials use.
- differentiate between "price" and "cost," and
apply the information to make informed decisions.
- learn about careers in engineering, design,
business, and related fields.
- apply their learning by designing their own
products.
