NIKE: Is what you see what you get?

     Eighth graders investigate the economic, social, and environmental aspects of Nike's production practices.

Sample Activities

Economic and Social Issues

  • Surveying peers about their shoe purchases
  • Researching wages and working conditions in Nike factories
  • Role play: Representing four different countries, students "bid" to attract foreign investment based their labor, environmental, and incentive policies.
Environmental Issues
  • Creating a timeline of a shoe's "lifecycle" from raw materials to disposal
  • Researching products made from ground-up sport shoe

Application and Assessment

  • Evaluating changes in learning and how this affects consumer behavior
  • Creating a video to educate peers about labor and environmental issues
