Example of Student Work on Ecological Footprint
"When was Your Lunch Born?"
Human needs are dependent on ecosystems. Producing food, for example, requires water, soil, microorganisms, rain, metals for machines, petroleum products, trees to absorb emissions, and hundreds of other resources.
In food production--and all activities--nature serves as the ultimate source of all materials and the final "sink" into which all wastes go.
To gain an understanding of these essential concepts, sixth grade students at East Middle School in Ypsilanti researched how their lunches were produced and illustrated the connections with a concept map.
