Who is involved in Sustainability Education?

Sustainability Education is a global movement with thousands of schools and organizations involved. While the movement has grown out of environmental, internatinoal, and global education, sustainability education has developed a distinct identity of its own.

International

  • The United Nations has declared 2005-2015 the Decade of Education for Sustainability. UNESCO (The UN Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) has produced an extensive on-line professional development training program called "Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future." http://www.unesco.org/education/tlsf/
  • Sustainability education initiatives are occurring throughout the world. Our bibliography has resources describing many examples.

In the US

  • The US Department of Education has funded a multi-million dollar project that will develop and disseminate sustainability units and software on the internet. The project is a partnership between the Cobb County, Georgia schools and the Center for a Sustainable Future in Shelburne, VT. http://csf.concord.org/esf
  • In New York City, the Sustainability Education Center has on-goings contract with public schools across the state to conduct professional development on sustainability. http://www.sustainabilityed.org
  • In Washtenaw County Michigan, the County government is working with public schools and Creative Change Educational Solutions to improve teaching and learning through ESF. See examples of this work.
